THE Fun-Tastically Failed Covers of the Fun-Tastic 4 and 5

But let’s go back a bit… Have you ever wondered just how we got to that fun-tastic, lovely cover? Well, that’s a long story…

What should we call it? 

Whenever we start creating a new book, the title is always the result of a long discussion in the creative team. With this book, we thought we had our title pretty early on. In fact, we really had our hearts set on it. We also thought something as simple as a number should be spelled out.

While we were sure we hit the jackpot with the title The Phenomenal Five, we were convinced it needed a subtitle, too. The Adventures Of The Phenomenal Five? The Crazy Adventures of /insert kids names/?

The next big question was, how do you fit all four/five kids onto the cover and have it look good? Needless to say, we got it wrong a couple of times. Should they be just sitting? Be upside down? Climbing around? We imagined life with 4 and 5 kids could be quite hectic! So we didn’t mind showing that on the cover.

Then finally, we got this brilliant idea: we should actually use the number! And the kids should be interacting with the number! We were sure we have struck gold. But the next challenge we faced was the same one we already faced from the beginning: how to make all the kids look good. And sure, we had a few missed shots.

Like, how is that kid holding on to the number? Why is he floating in the air? And the kid on the right with his tongue sticking out… Let’s not even go there! Luckily, our busy beaver illustrators worked day and night until everyone was happy with the result. But oh right, the title. With this awesome position of the number and the kiddos, our adored title didn’t fit. And trust us, we tried to make it fit.

But it just wasn’t working. NOTHING WORKED. 

Alright, no problem. We’re all super professional, super creative people here. We’ll just come up with a new title. Easier said than done! From The Wondrous World of 5 to The Super Stories of 5, we were furiously leafing through the dictionary, looking for alliteration and inventing new words, all the while slowly losing our minds.

Until finally, we got it. THE FUN-TASTIC 5. It had everything we wanted: it was FUN, it was FANTASTIC, and it also fit on the page with our big number 5. Phew.

Now the only thing left to do was color it.

Now you might think these all look the same. I mean really, they kinda do, don’t they? Just don’t tell our designers that! After hours and hours of deliberation and gallons of coffee and countless donuts, we finally had the result we wanted. It was superb. It was magnificent. It was FUN-TASTIC.

But wait!! What about the arrows? Which way should the arrows be pointing?!

Thus, our next best-seller was born!
